Thomas Bartling

Financial Planner Associate

A fiduciary commitment to you

My fiduciary responsibility to you informs everything I do daily. As a fiduciary, I place the client’s interests before my own and act as a guide, advising clients on their financial journey.

As a financial planner associate, I wear many different hats to support our clients and Platt Wealth Management advisors. Whether with compliance, operations, financial education tools, or financial planning, I am always eager to lend my knowledge and expertise. My first concern is our clients, to assist them with inquiries, requests, and other client-related items. I work to implement streamlined and holistic financial planning processes to help our clients reach their financial goals.

A bridge from healthcare to financial planning

In college, I wanted to be a physician assistant. I studied to become an Emergency Medical Technician and interned at a local hospital, providing care in oncology, neurology, ICU, and the Emergency Department. From there, I learned how to surrender myself to aid another human being and care for them as if they were my own family.

In 2013, I was diagnosed with a critical medical condition that ended my college plans. The next couple of years were some of the most challenging years of my life. The hardest part of my recovery was that I had to cope with not completing my degree and feeling like a failure. I knew my circumstances were outside my control, but the reality of having to postpone my goals was unsettling. Although I recovered from my condition, my suppressed immune system made the goal of physicians assistant impossible.

Luckily, I met a financial advisor who would shift my perspective and bridge the career gap between healthcare and finance. In healthcare, we stress the importance of a compassionate bedside manner to ensure a patient’s well-being. For me, it was a natural transition to empathize with another’s financial situation. Just like in medicine, preventative and healthy habits deter ailments or chronic conditions later in life. I approach your finances much as your primary care physician would. I gather data about your current financial situation and present suggestions for avoiding financial downside from unexpected events.

Ambition and achievement

Throughout my life, I have never started something that I didn’t finish. When I put my mind to something, I remain persistent and committed to performing at the highest of my abilities.

Setting goals and achieving those goals is an important driver in my life. I have experienced how overcoming obstacles, and following through with a plan can change your outlook and impact others in a meaningful way. The empowerment that comes from success leads to more success. This ambition is what I bring to the financial planning process.

I’m currently pursuing my Certified Financial Planner designation and hope to exemplify the fiduciary duty to become a trusted advisor and wealth advocate. I also plan to pursue my master’s degree in taxation to help clients protect their assets.

Creative problem solving

Before joining Platt Wealth Management, I worked as a financial services representative for a local credit union. From this role, I learned that extra care, commitment, and attention to detail are crucial for creating client success.

One day, I had a client who came in visibly anguished. She was drowning in credit card debt. Two other representatives had already told her there wasn’t a solution to her issue. She wasn’t a home-owner and couldn’t draw off a low-interest line of credit to pay off her high-interest credit cards.

I listened to her story and went through a checklist of options that might help her. She felt better, and we started talking on a more personal level. When she revealed that she had a vintage convertible that her deceased husband had left her, a light bulb clicked on in my mind for a creative solution, one she was uniquely qualified to take.

I suggested a cash-out refinance of the car that would allow her to consolidate her credit card debt under a much lower interest rate. Overjoyed, she gave me a big hug. The extra time with her, the extra care lead to a positive impact that I’m proud of.

Aspiration and responsibility

Most of my free time is dedicated to my CFP studies, as I pursue the expertise needed to help others achieve their goals. When I do have time for recreational activities, I enjoy working out, hiking, cooking, being with friends and family, and golfing. I regularly attend my church to encourage and strengthen me spiritually.

A positive impact

I enjoy my role as a financial planning associate because I can interact with clients personally. I get to know about their lives, and they get to know me as well. I love to communicate with people. Being able to hear from a client that I could better their financial situation gives me immense satisfaction. To be able to make that kind of impact in other’s lives is profound.

I am humbled and ecstatic to be a part of a registered investment advisory firm like Platt Wealth Management. It gives me joy and comfort to work in a collaborative, client-focused environment that shares my values.
